The 3,700 jobs lost during the month were primarily U.S. census jobs that had been filled on a temporary basis.

Minnesota’s unemployment rate dropped 0.2 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted 6.8 percent even though employers cut 3,700 jobs during the month, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) said on Thursday.

The state unemployment rate remained well below the national unemployment rate of 9.5 percent in June, which was down 0.2 percent from 9.7 in May.

The number of jobs in Minnesota has grown 0.4 percent in the past year, compared with a 0.1 percent decline nationally.

The state shed 3,700 jobs in June, primarily U.S. census jobs that had been filled on a temporary basis.

“Minnesota’s employment picture in June mirrored the nation’s, reflecting the uneven nature of economic recovery,” DEED Commissioner Dan McElroy said in a statement. “Still, Minnesota has gained more than 11,000 jobs in the past 12 months, representing the first year-over-year employment growth in the state since April 2008.”

The leisure and hospitality industry added the most jobs in June—5,100—followed by financial activities, which grew by 2,300 jobs.

Job losses during the month were led by the trade, transportation, and utilities sector, which was down 3,200 jobs, primarily in retail.

Losses in retail employment were largely due to declining consumer confidence and consumer spending.

Losses also occurred in other services (down 2,800), professional and business services (down 2,600), construction (down 900), manufacturing (down 900), information (down 200), education and health services (down 200), government (down 200), and logging and mining (down 100).

Over the past year, job gains occurred in leisure and hospitality (up 9,100), professional and business services (up 8,700), government (up 8,300), education and health services (up 7,100), and logging and mining (up 500).

However, the following sectors have lost jobs in the past year: construction (down 10,200), other services (down 8,100), financial activities (down 2,200), manufacturing (down 1,100), trade, transportation and utilities (down 1,000), and information (down 60).

Over the past year, job gains occurred in the St. Cloud metro area (up 0.9 percent), the Rochester metro area (up 0.9 percent) and the Duluth-Superior metro area (up 0.1 percent). Over-the-year job losses occurred in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area (down 0.1 percent) and the Mankato metro area (down 1.5 percent).

While Nintendo managed to lose a cool $290 million USD this past quarter (for very good reasons), its one-time rival Sega actually managed to have a showing in the black.

Or, rather, its parent company Sega Sammy Holdings did. Because without all those yen flowing in from the company’s pachinko business, Sega could have had a less impressive quarter. Sega’s consumer division, the part that sells video games for consoles and PCs, saw “firm” sales according to the company.

Sega’s major releases during the three month period, Alpha Protocol and Iron Man 2, were “slow.” Sega sold 700,000 copies of Obsidian’s espionage RPG, while the movie tie-in for Iron Man 2 moved a cool 1.12 million copies.

Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, rose 1.6 percent in the second quarter compared to 1.9 percent of previous quarter.

European shares are currently trading lower on Friday with FTSE 100 trading down by 36.40 points, DAX30 trading down by 40.55 points and CAC 40 trading down by 25.30 points.

The euro declined 0.31 percent to 1.3038 against the dollar and the yen advanced 0.83 percent against the greenback.

Crude oil futures declined 1.48 percent and copper futures fell 0.82 percent. in precious metal sector, gold futures advanced 0.41 percent and silver futures advanced 1.63 percent.

Asian stocks declined on Friday as higher-than-estimated unemployment in Japan and a poorer Macquarie Group ltd. earnings outlook overshadowed improved profit targets at Sony and Panasonic.

Japanese Nikkei declined 1.64 percent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.30 percent and Chinese Shanghai declined 0.40 percent.
