Debt Collectors have been known to harass people, it is important that you know your rights when dealing with them. First of all, they cannot contact you before 8.00 am and not after 9.00 pm.
If they are currently doing this then the chances are good that they are breaking the law and you can sue them for this. It is important that you also understand that most debt collectors buy debt from the originally creditor for a fraction of the total amount and try and collect the total from you. this is how they make their profit.
It also has to do with why their employees are so aggressive, they are paid by commission and get a portion of any amount that they negotiate. It is important that you do not let them scare you into paying them, this is one technique they love to use.
If the collection account has been on your credit report for more than 7 years, you can have it deleted. if not and you actually own the account, you can negotiate to pay an amount less than the original amount owed. It is important to also request that the collection be deleted from your credit report once you come to an agreement with them.
You also want to get this agreement in writing, to protect yourself and make sure it actually gets deleted. A lot of debt collection companies have been known to go out of their way to break the law, you want to also take anything they tell you with a grain of salt in reference to what they can and cannot do to you legally.
